Yes, filling up your car’s gas tank is expensive – but spare those with yachts a tear.
“It used to be $2,500 to take my boat out for lunch, but this year it’s going to be $5,000,” one yacht owner who stops in the Hamptons complained to the Post.
He noted that even though his captain was the one doing the refueling, he still felt the pain when it came time to pay the bill.
“It cost 72% more to bring the boat to New York this year from Florida,” another kvet said, noting that his boat made the expensive trip from an exclusive marina in Miami to another in Montauk. .
The problem is the price of diesel, which rose much more than gasoline during this year’s energy crisis. A gallon of gasoline is up an average of $1.03 this week nationally compared to a year ago. But a gallon of diesel rose more than $1.77, according to the US Energy Information Administration.
The premium was even higher in the Mid-Atlantic region — rising more than $2 to $5.52 a gallon, according to the agency — an area that includes the swanky marinas of the Hamptons.
Yacht owners are particularly upset with the premium they pay at local docks. With only a handful of places to refuel in the Hamptons, boat owners are at the mercy of the marina. A boat owner estimates that he charges at least a dollar or two more per gallon of diesel.
Needless to say, sympathy from dock owners is rare.
“Everyone is complaining but all the docks are still at capacity,” one dock owner told the Post, predicting that even if the 1% “bitch and moan,” they probably won’t change their behavior.
“The rich can be very cheap with certain things. Spending a thousand dollars for lunch is fine, but paying a few hundred extra dollars for fuel will bore them,” the dock owner said.
“There are guys worth hundreds of millions who cut up coupons and give them to the crew to get groceries,” adds the dock owner. “It sucks, but if you’re complaining about refueling a car, it’s a necessity. Boats are a luxury so it’s a bit deaf.
A large boat around 70 feet will burn around 130 gallons per hour just to run the engines. When he sails, he will consume even more.
A super yacht like the Eclipse – Roman Abramovich’s 500ft-plus vessel – packs around 1 million liters of fuel and costs around $1.8 million to fill its tank, based on diesel prices in the Mediterranean east where the boat is parked. A full tank takes the Eclipse 6,000 nautical miles, the length of a round trip between New York and London.
Other owners add that when they put the cost of diesel into perspective, it doesn’t seem too bad.
“Fuel is the least of my costs,” said one yacht owner. “The full-time crew and maintenance cost $750,000 a year…so yeah.”
