world talking news – Mystery in Italy after £31,000 in cash found stashed in priest’s confessional in Rome church
It was both an acute assault of conscience or a beneficiant act of charity.
An nameless benefactor has left €36,000 (£31,625) stashed within the confessional field of a church close to the Vatican in Rome.
The cash, in crisp €50 euro notes, was wedged beneath a cushion within the priest’s half of the confessional.
The financial institution notes have been contained in two plastic luggage, one blue and the opposite white.
When the stash was found within the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie alle Fornaci by a caretaker, there have been fears that it might have been a bomb and the police have been referred to as.
However when Carabinieri officers opened the packages, they discovered they have been stuffed full of money.
They’re checking video footage from safety cameras positioned across the church.
“In the mean time we aren’t excluding any principle,” Lieutenant Salvatore Friano, a Carabinieri officer, advised Il Messagero newspaper.
“We’re making an attempt to determine whether or not this was a benefactor who wished to donate the cash to the church, or somebody who merely wished to eliminate soiled cash. Maybe it was their means of paying their dues, each with the legislation and their very own conscience.
“We will’t exclude the truth that this cash was acquired illegally, maybe from a current theft.”
