WASHINGTON — World Bank President David Malpass on Tuesday urged advanced economies to increase food aid to developing countries and work to increase production of food, energy and fertilizers to address shortages. and rising prices caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Malpass, speaking at an event with the head of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, said cash payments or vouchers would be a good way to help farmers in poor countries buy fertilizer to ensure the continued food production.

Georgieva said the crisis was exacerbating the divergence between rich and poor countries, and said diversifying the production of food, energy and fertilizers was also essential to reduce dependence on Russia.
