Woman dead, another seriously injured in accident near University of Ottawa

One woman died and another remained in hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a vehicle at the intersection of King Edward Avenue and Somerset Street East near the University of Ottawa, early Tuesday.

The Ottawa Police Service said the collision involving the two women and a Mazda3 happened just after 5:30 a.m.

One of the women, both in their 20s, died of her injuries in hospital.

The Ottawa Paramedic Service said a paramedic coming off the night shift arrived quickly on the scene. Other units soon followed.

A worker at the iconic university tavern says the popular uOttawa student haunt was not open when the accident happened, but the incident came as no surprise to her.

« We didn’t see the accident (from Tuesday), but every day we see drivers (accelerating through the intersection), » Ragida Abu Hamad said.

« We’ve been saying for a long time…the city needs to put (traffic) cameras there. »

Right turns at red lights are also prohibited from westbound Somerset Street East to King Edward, but such signs are ignored, the staff member said.
