Winners of the European Film Awards

The European Film Awards (EFA), the highest pan-European film honor, has kicked off in Berlin.

For the first time, the EFAs are taking place in mid-January, right in the middle of awards season, with the aim of positioning the event as a harbinger of the Baftas and Oscars and generating buzz around European contenders.

And, indeed, all of this year’s EFA Best Picture nominees are Oscar contenders: Joachim Trier’s Norwegian melodrama Sentimental valuePalme d’Or for Jafar Panahi, Franco-Iranian thriller It was just an accidentOlivier Laxe’s post-apocalyptic road movie SiratMascha Schilinski’s multi-generational German period film Falling soundand Kaouther Ben Hania’s poignant drama in Gaza Hind Rajab’s voice.

In the race for director, LaxePanahi, Trier and Schilinski will face Yorgos Lanthimos, nominee for the lead role of Emma Stone/Jessie Plemons Bugonia.

Liv Ullmann, two-time Academy Award-nominated Norwegian actress and director best known for her 1970s classics like Screams and whispersAnd Scenes from a weddingwill receive a lifetime achievement honor at this year’s EFA. Alice Rohrwacher, the Italian director of The Chimera, FutureAnd Happy like Lazzaro will be awarded the European Achievement in World Cinema Award.
