« Our activism is rooted in serving the underserved, the forgotten, the marginalized. I used to object to describing my work as ‘activism’ because that adjective was used to delegitimize my work But over time I’ve come to accept and accept the description, » Ryan wrote. She quotes Nikole Hannah-Jones of The New York Times’ 1619 Project saying that « all journalism is activism ».
“To black journalists, especially black women, his words are gospel,” Ryan wrote. « Hannah-Jones is right – all journalism is activism and what matters most is the cause you are an activist for. At the end of the day, who are you fighting for? » she asked.
The White House reporter frequently made headlines during the Trump years for her hostile interactions in the press conference room.

President Trump was a strong presence in Ryan’s book, making an appearance at least 59 times in the roughly 150-page book.
A staunch critic of the former president, Ryan has launched personal and political attacks against him.
She directly blamed Trump for « driving her to drink » after receiving one of the inoperative pipe bombs sent to various Democrats and members of the media in 2018.

April Ryan has complained of being confronted with « microaggressions » daily at the Trump White House.

« In the world of journalism, I am an endurance athlete. By force of will, I stayed in my profession and I climbed. My rise was not always welcome, but it was always necessary » , began a passage.
In another, she typed, « Unlike my great colleagues and personal friends who are high on the cover for raising important and incisive points, I am not. My identity as a black woman is always erased from The Conversation. Even when we fire up the discussion. Let me be blunt: a lot of people just don’t want to give credit to black women. »
