Vatican Welcomes Supreme Court Ruling on Abortion, Says Being Pro-Life Means Supporting Other Issues Too

The Vatican has praised the US Supreme Court for defending life and overturning the country’s nearly 50-year-old stance on abortion.

In a pair of statements, the Vatican also encouraged activists to understand that being « pro-life » means supporting other issues, including all those that threaten life, such as guns, poverty and rising maternal mortality rates, Reuters reported.

« Being for life, always, for example, means worrying if the mortality rate of women due to maternity increases, » said Andrea Tornielli, editorial director of the Vatican.

Being pro-life requires a more holistic approach than simply being anti-abortion, he continued.

« To be for life, always is to ask how to help women welcome new life, » he wrote in an op-ed on Saturday.

The editorial director also said those who identify as pro-lifers should challenge their own views on gun ownership and gun safety.

Tornielli’s statement was preceded by a statement from the Vatican’s Academy for Life, released the day before.

« The fact that a great country with a long democratic tradition has changed its position on this issue also challenges the whole world, » said Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, who heads the Pontifical Academy for Life, Reuters reported.

Paglia described the Supreme Court’s decision as a « strong invitation to reflect » on the value of life in a society that is « losing the passion for life ».

« By choosing life, our responsibility for the future of humanity is at stake, » Paglia added.
