US comments on death of US fighter in Ukraine — RT World News
Another American has died in fighting in Ukraine, the US State Department revealed on Friday, confirming previous claims by Russian officials.
« We can confirm the death of an American citizen in Ukraine,a U.S. State Department spokesperson told Newsweek on Friday. « Out of respect for the family’s privacy, we have no further comments at this time..”
On Friday, Oleg Kozhemyako, governor of Russia’s Far Eastern Primorsky region, said his region’s « Tiger » military unit eliminated an American while repelling an attack by a group of mercenaries from several countries.
« An American mercenary was destroyed in Ukrainehe said on his Telegram, attaching photos of a US passport and a Ukrainian military service card, apparently issued in the name of Joshua Alan Jones. Identity documents indicate that he was born in Tennessee and joined the Ukrainian army on July 14 with military unit A3449.
According to Andrey Rudenko, a Russian military journalist, the fighter was not killed by Russian or allied forces, but by his comrades as he « fleeing the position.”
The State Department spokesperson recalled thatUS citizens should not travel to Ukraine, due to the active armed conflict and the singling out of US citizens in Ukraine by Russian government security officials.”
« U.S. citizens in Ukraine should depart immediately if safe to do so using any commercial or private ground transportation available,“, reiterated the representative.
The Russian Defense Ministry has repeatedly claimed that it destroyed foreign mercenaries in Ukraine, including by carrying out high-precision missile strikes. Moreover, earlier this month, authorities in the Donetsk People’s Republic said three Western nationals accused of fighting as mercenaries for Ukraine could be sentenced to death while two others face up to eight years behind bars for the same reason.
Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry warned that mercenaries are not considered combatants under international law and “the best thing that awaits them if they are caught alive is a trial and maximum prison sentences.”
