Ukraine strikes ammunition depot in Russia – governor – RT Russia and the former Soviet Union

The Ukrainian army shelled an ammunition depot in the Belgorod region of southern Russia, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov announced on Tuesday. The attack started a major fire at the depot, causing secondary detonations of ammunition, he added.

The shelling prompted the evacuation of a nearby village, Gladkov said, adding that emergency services and local authorities had been dispatched to the scene. According to initial information, the attack caused no deaths or injuries.

Footage circulating online shows a major fire, with explosions heard in the background. The fire sent a large cloud of smoke into the sky above the now destroyed depot.

Earlier today, a residential building was damaged in the Ukrainian bombardment of the city of Belgorod itself. An identified object, believed to be debris from a Ukrainian projectile or drone, intercepted by Russian air defenses, crashed into the building, damaging its roof and upper floor.

Belgorod is among the Russian border regions that have repeatedly come under Ukrainian bombardment and drone attacks in the ongoing conflict. Russia sent troops to Ukraine on February 24, citing kyiv’s failure to implement the Minsk Accords, intended to give Donetsk and Luhansk regions special status within the Ukrainian state. The protocols, brokered by Germany and France, were first signed in 2014. Former Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko has since admitted that kyiv’s main goal was to use the ceasefire to save time and « to create powerful armed forces. »

In February 2022, the Kremlin recognized the Donbas republics, which have since joined the Russian Federation, as independent states, and demanded that Ukraine officially declare itself a neutral country that will never join any Western military bloc. kyiv insists Russian offensive was unprovoked
