UK politicians ‘met by sex workers’ at hotel during overseas visit: report

British politicians have reportedly been met by sex workers at their hotel during a state visit abroad, fearing such behavior could expose them to blackmail.

« The bad behavior is quite astonishing, » a senior government source told Britain’s The Times newspaper. « If a hostile state is lucky, they can get pictures, and they’ll make sure they know exactly what happened. And then they might get something out of it. »

The sex worker’s visit may have taken place without the knowledge of deputies in advance, the Times noted.

A separate source also complained to The Times that visits by MPs to authoritarian countries gave those countries’ leaders some legitimacy as « global statesmen with international friends ».

The trips result from All-Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs), which allow parliamentarians – regardless of their political affiliation – to campaign on specific issues, often leading to visits to foreign states. The groups have no formal system for deciding their membership and generally do not have dedicated working staff.

However, the APPG’s trips have been linked to a number of other allegations, including a claim that a Labor MP prefers « Russian girls » and that MPs have attended parties where young people have been offered for sex.

A number of MPs pointed out that some of the attendees quietly and honestly pursued the interest of travel, but others used it as an outlet for recreation, Politico reported.

A former parliamentarian has said a country’s government is « deeply frustrated » by the « rude behaviour » of visiting MPs. « They drink and behave badly and arrogantly. They are condescending to their fellow politicians, not to mention the people around them, the people of [the host country] and unfortunately the wait staff. »

A House of Commons standards committee has called for greater regulation and transparency of funding for APPGs, calling for a reduction in the number of groups and arguing that the current scale « makes access and influence more likely inappropriate ».
