UFC firebrand Jorge Masvidal is plotting his return to the rankings – and says he wants to go through the organization’s biggest star to get there.
Former welterweight title challenger Masvidal recently hit a fork in the road, losing three straight fights against the elite 170lbs to Kamaru Usman (x2) and Colby Covington, but again called for a fight with Conor McGregor – something he says he wants to get it over with before the Irishman dies.
Masvidal has positioned himself for a fight with McGregor in the past, but a fight between two of the UFC’s biggest pay-per-views never really materialized.
However, with Masvidal and McGregor in serious need of a revitalizing win on their records after going five bouts without a win in the cage, ‘Gamebred’ says now is the time for the two stars to cross paths.
“Of course before this guy overdoses on cocaine and the fight never happens and I don’t make that much easy money, I just want to smash Conor’s face.Masvidal told Blockasset.
“Let’s take that salary, get rid of that, sell the most pay-per-views before this guy hurts himself or someone else. I just, like, boom, I got this check real quick ’cause I got kids, right? I need that fucking money.”
Masvidal might just need his own ‘red panty night’. The welterweight star is still battling legal issues following his alleged attack on rival Covington outside a Miami restaurant in the weeks after the pair clashed at a high-level UFC main event.
Covington won that fight by clear unanimous decision before Masvidal renewed his street rivalry in an incident that reportedly left Covington with a chipped tooth, an injured wrist and damaged his designer Rolex watch.
As such, Masvidal handed another icing on his fight offer to McGregor: the UFC ‘Bad Motherf***er’ belt, the one-time title he won against Nate Diaz in late 2019.
“I would only pull out the BMF belt for a bad motherfucker and some cash,“said Masvidal.
“You a bad motherfucker, you got money, let’s put some money, put some money in receivership. I put a few million aside, you put a few million aside and it comes with the belt as icing on the cake.
“That’s what a bad motherfucker would do is get that money. It’s there, but it has to be right under my stipulations, and with that belt on I’m like a fuckin’ bully.”
McGregor, meanwhile, offered no clear suggestions as to his next move as he continues to recover from the badly broken leg he suffered last summer in his third fight with Dustin Poirier.
He was cleared to return to the fight in full contact in April and recently posted footage of him kicking a heavy bag with the aforementioned member, which signaled he was nearing his return to the cage. ‘UFC.
The Irishman also suggested he would likely return as a welterweight after adding some extra muscle to his body during his time away from the sport.
And as far as Masvidal is concerned, a date in November or December would seem logical to everyone involved.
“I would say that I would like to be [at Madison Square Garden] in December“said Masvidal.
“It’s a strong possibility, November, December. I will definitely fight this year no matter what. I don’t want to talk too much about it, but as you know, I have issues and stuff that I need to sort out. But I will be there.”
