Your next Uber Eats order may be delivered to you via the drone.
Uber Technologies announced on Thursday that it is associated with Flytrex, an autonomous drone delivery system, to make food deliveries to its customers. The company said it would deploy service in the Uber pilot markets is eating by the end of the year.
“Uber aims to build the most flexible multimodal delivery network in the world – extending beyond cars, bikes and letters to sidewalk robots and now autonomous air delivery,” Uber said in its press release.
The company, known for its carpooling services, said that it would also invest in Flytrex to “accelerate the development and deployment of drone delivery technology” without specifying the size of the investment.
Flytrex drones have stolen more than 200,000 meals in suburban households in the past three years, according to Uber. This is one of the four companies authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration to carry out operations “beyond the visual line of view”, that is to say when a pilot cannot see the plane with the naked eye.
Uber did not immediately respond to CBS Moneywatch comment to request information about where the service will be controlled and how deliveries will work.
The announcement marks another advance for Uber, which started in May to deliver food via sidewalk robots in Los Angeles. Last week, the company announced its intention to leave customers Book helicopter wrinkles Thanks to its carpooling application.
As much commented on where the drone delivery service will be piloted and how the deliveries will work, Uber highlighted its “existing robotic delivery partnerships”, as a previous one, claiming that “there is no consumer price difference between the moment when an AV is sent or a letter”.
The company added: “There are no additional details to share for the moment.”
Uber’s actions have climbed more than 50% since the start of the year.
Other companies have also trained in the delivery of drones as technology becomes more common.
Doordash, one of Uber Eats competitors, announced a partnership with Flytrex in June to deliver food in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Chipotle also pilots drone technology in the city of Texas. Last month, he said he would steal food to Dallas customers through a Partnership with Ziplinewhich also has the approval of the FAA for deliveries of commercial drones.
