LONDON — Tyson Fury has decided to « step away » from boxing, just three days after saying he was returning to the sport.

Fury turned 34 on Friday and posted a message on social media saying: « A big thank you to everyone who has contributed to my career over the years and after long difficult conversations (I finally) decided to go and on my 34th birthday, I say bon voyage.

This apparently puts Fury back in retirement, after announcing on Tuesday that he was returning to boxing to set up a fight against Derek Chisora, a fellow Brit he beat twice early in his career.

The announcement had sparked speculation that reigning WBC heavyweight champion Fury was targeting a potential unification bout between the winner between WBA, IBF and WBO titleholder Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua, who are battling on August 20 in Saudi Arabia.

Fury didn’t give a reason for his apparent change of heart.

Unbeaten Fury first said after his win over Dillian Whyte at Wembley Stadium in April that he was retiring from the sport.
