Trump suggests that federal workers on leave not to receive wages after closing

Hundreds of thousands of federal workers on leave may not automatically receive a return salary once the government reappears, said President Trump on Tuesday, which aroused renewed fears that the administration could try to get around the federal law and maximize the closure pain.

The president’s comments, who echoed a memo project that circulated at the White House, contradicted the own administrative councils that employees on leave receive a retroactive salary shortly after the Congress concluded a financing agreement.

After the longest closure in history – a five -week closure that started under Mr. Trump at the end of 2018 – Congress adopted a guaranteed law a return salary for the millions of federal workers who often bear financial brownf in shortcomings. This measure, known as the government’s treatment of government employees, applied not only to this closure but also to future budgetary failures, repressing a major source of uncertainty for federal workers taken in the political fray.

Trump signed this measure in 2019. But his administration six years later now seems to have interpreted his guarantees very differently.

In the memo project, which was shared on Tuesday by a White House official, the administration said that only workers deemed essential can automatically have the right to pay once the dead end. This includes the military soldiers, air traffic controllers and others who are currently required to present themselves for the closure.

For those who are on leave, however, the note of the White House presented the case according to which the Congress must always explicitly approve the financing so that any payment occurs.
