President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that his administration was close to an agreement with Harvard University, which would include a payment of $ 500 million by the Ivy League institution, after months of school policies.
The administration was disputed with several prestigious universities, threatening to retain federal funds on issues such as pro-Palestinian demonstrations against the War of Israel in Gaza, the diversity of the campus and transgender policies.
“We are in the process of getting closer,” Trump told journalists at an event at the Oval Office. “Linda ends the latest details,” he said, referring to education secretary Linda McMahon.
“And they will pay around $ 500 million and they will use business schools. They will teach people how to do AI and many other things, engines, a lot,” he said. He did not offer any other details on the agreement.
Harvard, based in Cambridge, in the Massachuset, made no immediate comments on Trump’s remarks.
Defenders of rights have raised freedom of expression, privacy and academic freedom concerning the Trump administration probes in universities.
Trump said Harvard and other universities allowed anti-Semitism demonstrations during pro-Palestinian demonstrations.
The demonstrators, including certain Jewish groups, say that the government is wrongly equivalent to the criticism of the Israel Assault against Gaza and its occupation of the Palestinian territories in anti -Semitism and plea for Palestinian rights with support for extremism. The government has not announced its probe on Islamophobia.
The Harvard working groups said at the end of April that the Jewish and Muslims of the school were faced with fanaticism and abuses during the War of Israel in Gaza after the attack on Hamas in October 2023.
Several other Ivy League schools have concluded agreements with the Trump administration in recent months, including Columbia University and Brown University, which has accepted certain government requests. Columbia has agreed to pay more than $ 220 million to the government and Brown said it would pay $ 50 million to support the development of local workforce.
The Trump administration focused on the pro-Palestinian protest movement that has taken a tour of the Harvard campus, moving to more than $ 2 billion in university research funding.
He also sought to prevent international students from frequenting school, threatened Harvard’s accreditation status and opened the door to cut more funds by finding it violated the Federal Civil Rights Act.
Harvard president Alan Garber said that the various federal actions since Trump returned to office in January could strip the school of nearly a billion dollars per year, forcing him to dismiss staff and freeze hiring.
Harvard challenged some of these actions before the court, arguing that the Trump administration retaliated against it in violation of its free-discourse rights after refusing to respond to civil servants’ demands to revise its governance, its hiring and its academic programs to align themselves with their ideological program.
His two proceedings were assigned to the American district judge Allison Burroughs, a named Boston based on former Democratic president Barack Obama, who prevented the Trump administration from closing the door of international students and, on September 3, prevented the funding of Harvard’s research.
But the administration in the days following the decision continued to degenerate its fight with Harvard. One day before Trump’s latest comments, the United States Ministry of Health and Social Services said that this would begin a process that could lead to school that school be prohibited from contracts with all government agencies or receive funding.
The government had to face other legal setbacks in its attempts to freeze federal funding to universities. Last week, a federal judge ordered Trump administration to restore more than $ 500 million in frozen federal subsidies at the University of California in Los Angeles.
