President Donald Trump said Wednesday he may visit Egypt this weekend as his negotiators seek to reach a ceasefire deal over hostages in Gaza.
Trump told the White House that a deal was “very close” and that he could leave for the region on Saturday. He spoke after talking about discussions with his team. Negotiators met in Egypt to try to reach an agreement.
While Trump was hosting an event, Secretary of State Marco Rubio entered the room and handed him a note. Trump read it and then described what the note said.
“I just got a memo from the secretary of state saying we’re very close to a deal in the Middle East and they’re going to need me pretty quickly,” Trump said.
He added that he would likely leave either before the hostages were released or shortly afterward.
Trump ended his appearance at the White House event by saying, “I have to go now to try to solve some problems in the Middle East.”
