It is with the final plea of the Crown prosecutor that the hearings in this trial ended at the Gatineau courthouse on Tuesday morning.

After being pushed back half an hour due to a shortage of security constables, the court resumed its work with prosecutor Diane Legault, who returned to the central elements of the charge for the alleged sexual assault. , which dates back to the beginning of 1988.

Me Legault told the judge that he presented him with evidence « beyond a reasonable doubt », the clearest part of which is taken from the accuser’s testimony in court.

« It’s not like she decided 34 years later that this is the person who was her abuser because she saw him on TV. It’s a situation that happened 34 years ago, but that day, she immediately knew it was Mr. Fortin, « she told the judge.

At the time of the charge, in the summer of 2021, Major-General Dany Fortin appeared regularly on television, as he was in charge of the distribution of vaccines against COVID-19 during the vast vaccination operation.

On Monday, defense attorney Isabel Schurman tried to highlight the holes in the prosecutor’s case by pointing out apparent contradictions in the defendant’s testimony.

Rather than demonstrating that the assault would never have taken place, Me Schurman tried to argue that the accused could have been in the wrong person, in particular because of the very poor lighting during the alleged event and the short time frame in which this took place.

Emotional, the complainant, whose name is subject to a publication ban, wiped away a few tears when describing the alleged facts.

Dany Fortin had his responsibilities removed as soon as the allegation against him became known.
