The gunfire broke out at Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Vestavia Hills, Vestavia Hills Police Department Capt. Shane Ware said at a news conference.

Local media reported that the church was hosting a potluck at the time. Vestavia Hills is a town of about 40,000 people about 11 kilometers southeast of Birmingham.

“Three people were shot. Two are currently undergoing treatment. Unfortunately, one of the people who was shot died,” Ware said.

Ware said a suspect, who has not been identified, has been arrested following the attack. Police did not speculate on the motive for the rampage.

« It’s a traumatic thing that happened to our community, not just the church, » Reverend Kelley Hudlow told local television station WVTM in an interview. Hudlow said no church staff were injured in the shooting.
