There’s no other way to say it: Thomas Frank’s Tottenham Hotspur are a complete disaster after losing at home to relegation-threatened West Ham on Saturday.
SPURS 1-2 WEST HAM — Highlights and video recap
Below is the latest reaction from Thomas Frank, speaking after Spurs hit a new low in a busy season.
By pushing for a winner, then conceding: “It seems like we’ve seen this before – against Bournemouth where we have a really good second half, get the equalizer and push for the winner, at the top of the game, having chances, not crossing the line, then switching off in the last moment of the game.”
…
“I think we started well the first 15 minutes and then we went 1-0 up. After that I felt we rushed too much, we gave the ball away too much for the rest of the first half. I think the half helped, the boys pushed and did everything right, equalized and created chances. Of course it’s very disappointing that we lost in the last minute of the match. … If we can’t win we have to get the game zero.”
On what he said at halftime: “We talked about a little adjustment in the preparations. … Also, (being) a little calmer, a few more passes, don’t rush. If you can’t win high, go down, wait for the moment and go again. I think they did everything right.”
On Spurs’ struggle to defend set pieces and aerial balls, leading to winner: “It’s probably our worst defensive game. We’ve been exceptional all year. I also think we didn’t have the same size and physique as West Ham – a bit because of the personnel and what’s available. Of course we have to do better, we have to be competitive.”
On full-time boos: “It’s not a good feeling to go out with, but I understand the frustration. I completely understand the frustration. We lose to a great London rival, there’s nothing worse, and you have to do it at the last minute. We couldn’t win at home, and we worked very, very hard to try to achieve that. I hope they can see the efforts of the boys, they work very hard. They did everything well in the second half. At the moment we are in this period where everything – we put one right foot and it should have been left, and the other.
On fans chanting “You’re going to be fired in the morning” and worrying about his job: “I feel the absolute support of everyone here at the club. Everyone wants the same thing: long-term success. We are doing a lot of things behind the scenes. We are just not getting the results, which is extremely crucial and important, so we keep going.”
“Right now we have to stay together and work hard tomorrow on the training pitch. Honestly, (it’s) a disastrous moment for us. Thank you fans for always sticking with us.”
…
On first half performance compared to second half: “We play sometimes well, sometimes badly. This moment is like this – (give away) two or three shots, concede two goals. It’s very easy for (the opponent), but nothing changes – we stay together, stay silent in this moment, work harder and start again.”
