Stockholm – John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret and John M. Martinis won the Nobel Physics Prize on Tuesday for research on apparently obscure quantum tunnels that advances digital technology.
Clarke, 83, conducted his research at the University of California in Berkeley; Martinis at the University of California in Santa Barbara; And Deposit in Yale and also at the University of California in Santa Barbara.
“To put it slightly, it was the surprise of my life,” said Clarke to journalists during the phone announcement after being informed of his victory.
He paid tribute to the two other winners, saying that “their contributions are simply overwhelming”.
“Our discovery in some respects is the basis of quantum computer science. At the moment, exactly when it is integrated is not entirely clear for me.”
However, speaking of his mobile phone, Clarke added: “One of the underlying reasons that mobile phones work is because of all this work. ”

The Nobel Committee said that the work of the winners in the 1980s continues to provide opportunities to develop “the next generation of quantum technologies, including quantum cryptography, quantum computers and quantum sensors”.
“It is wonderful to be able to celebrate the way in which the quantum -centennial mechanics continuously offer new surprises. It is also extremely useful, because quantum mechanics is the basis of all digital technologies,” said Olle Eriksson, president of the Nobel Committee for Physics.
The field of quantum mechanics old 100 years deals with the apparently impossible subatomic world where switches can be at the same time and parts of the atoms of atoms through what seems to be impenetrable barriers. The work of the award -winning trio has contributed to taking this worldwide in the world, where it has the potential to overcome IT and communications.
What the three physicists have done “is to take the scale of something that we cannot see, we cannot touch, we cannot feel and bring it to the scale of something recognizable and do something on which you can build,” said the editor of Physics Today Richard Fitzgerald, who in the 1990s worked in a group of competitors.
“Quantum Computers is a very obvious use, but they can also be used for quantum sensors, in order to be able to make very sensitive measures of magnetic fields, for example, and perhaps also for cryptography, in order to code information so that it cannot be easily listened to by a third party,” said Mark Pearce, a teacher of the astrophysics and the Nobel Physical Committee.

This is the 119th time that the price has been awarded. Last year, the pioneers of artificial intelligence John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton won the prize for physics for helping to create the constituent elements of automatic learning.
Monday, Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi won the Nobel Prize in Medicine on Monday for discoveries on how the immune system knows how to attack germs and not our body.
Nobel ads continue with the chemistry prize on Wednesday and literature on Thursday. The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday and the Nobel Memorial in economics prize on October 13.
The award ceremony will take place on December 10, the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel in 1896, the rich Swedish industrialist and the inventor of Dynamite who founded the prices.
The prices relate to invaluable prestige and a cash scholarship of 11 million Swedish Kronor (nearly $ 1.2 million).
