Stockholm – John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret and John M. Martinis won the Nobel Physics Prize on Tuesday for research on quantum mechanical tunneling.
Clarke conducted his research at the University of California in Berkeley; Martinis at the University of California in Santa Barbara; And Deposit in Yale and also at the University of California in Santa Barbara.
“To put it slightly, it was the surprise of my life,” said Clarke to journalists during the phone announcement after being informed of his victory.
He paid tribute to the two other winners, saying that “their contributions are simply overwhelming”.
“Our discovery in some respects is the basis of quantum computer science. At the moment, exactly when it is integrated is not entirely clear for me.”
Speaking from his mobile phone, Clarke said: “One of the underlying reasons that mobile phones work is because of all this work.”
The Nobel Committee said that the work of the winners offers opportunities to develop “the next generation of quantum technologies, including quantum cryptography, quantum computers and quantum sensors”.
“It is wonderful to be able to celebrate the way in which the quantum -centennial mechanics continuously offer new surprises. It is also extremely useful, because quantum mechanics is the basis of all digital technologies,” said Olle Eriksson, president of the Nobel Committee for Physics.
This is the 119th time that the price has been awarded. Last year, the pioneers of artificial intelligence John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton won the prize for physics for helping to create the constituent elements of automatic learning.
Monday, Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi won the Nobel Prize in Medicine on Monday for discoveries on how the immune system knows how to attack germs and not our body.
Nobel ads continue with the chemistry prize on Wednesday and literature on Thursday. The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday and the Nobel Memorial in economics prize on October 13.
The award ceremony will take place on December 10, the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel in 1896, the rich Swedish industrialist and the inventor of Dynamite who founded the prices.
The prices relate to invaluable prestige and a cash scholarship of 11 million Swedish Kronor (nearly $ 1.2 million).
