Paramount is keeping May scary and will release the next one Paranormal activity film on May 21, 2027.
The untitled feature film is produced by franchise newcomer James Wan and directed by Ian Tuason, with plot details being kept under wraps.
This will be the eighth film in the franchise that began with Oren Peli’s ultra-low-budget 2007 film, which grossed $194.2 million and is considered one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Originally filmed for just $15,000, Jason Blum discovered the feature and pumped additional funds into the film before releasing it and turning it into a sleeper hit that helped popularize the found footage genre.
Blum will produce for him and Wan’s Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, while Peli will produce for his Solana Films. Paramount is co-producing and co-financing with Blumhouse-Atomic Monster.
May has become a month full of surprises for scares, with New Line’s Final destination: Bloodlines earning $315.9 million globally after opening on May 16 last year. This year, Focus Features presents the Toronto sensation Obsession bowing on May 15.
In addition to the original film, the Paranormal franchise entries include Paranormal Activity 2 (2010), Paranormal Activity 3 (2011), Paranormal Activity 4 (2012), The marked (2014), The ghost dimension (2015), and Next of kin (2021). In total, they grossed a total of $900 million worldwide.
“I have been a great admirer of Paranormal activity since the brilliant first film, with its creeping slowness and subtle ability to make the invisible terrifying. I look forward to building on his legacy and helping shape the next evolution of this chilling found footage franchise,” Wan said last month when the film was announced.
