The JBM provides free legal advice

Quebec citizens tormented by legal issues will be able to receive free advice on Saturday October 22 and Sunday October 23. Indeed, the Telephone Legal Clinic of the Young Bar of Montreal (YBM) is back, for a 39e editing.

This free consultation service offered to the Quebec population is organized by the YBM, in partnership with the Barreau du Québec and the CAIJ.

“The YBM is very proud to hold its 39e edition of the Telephone Legal Clinic. Young lawyers are at the heart of access to justice and make a difference, year after year, in the lives of litigants in Quebec. The YBM Telephone Legal Clinic is a fine example of projects that make a real difference in the lives of Quebecers,” said Alexandra Paquette, President of the YBM.

Make justice accessible

The main objective of this initiative is to make justice accessible, says the JBM. This is also « one of the two fundamental missions » of the organization founded in 1898, the second being to ensure that the interests of its members are defended.

« The passage in the middle of the justice can sometimes be a source of several questions and it is essential to offer activities that allow the population to be informed and to know their rights, and this, for free », argues the YBM .

Catherine Claveau, Bâtonnière du Québec, states that « access to justice is a priority for the Barreau du Québec, and we are proud to support initiatives such as the JBM Telephone Legal Clinic, which occasionally offers the population easy access and fast to a lawyer. We salute the lawyers who generously give of their time to make this operation a success,” she said.

An event awaited by Quebecers

According to the YBM, many Quebecers seek the services of the Telephone Legal Clinic every year, so much so that it is now an appointment expected by the population.

For example, nearly 4,000 citizens dialed the organization’s number as part of this initiative last year.

The questions callers want answers to typically relate to family, neighborhood, consumption of property, work, and estate management.

This action has been carried out twice a year by the YBM since 2018. The organization can count on the support of more than a hundred volunteer lawyers and on the collaboration of the Young Bar of Quebec (JBQ) and the Association of Young Regional Bars (AJBR).

“What a pleasure this year to find the superb JBM team and all the volunteers for the 39e edition of the Telephone Legal Clinic which will take place 100% face-to-face, for the first time in two years! As an essential resource for legal knowledge, the CAIJ is proud to support this flagship event by sharing its information resources as well as its infrastructures,” commented Nancy J. Trudel, Executive Director of the CAIJ.

The YBM Telephone Legal Clinic will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and can be reached at the following number: 1 844 779 6232
