The Himars transform the battle for Ukraine and modern warfare

MYKOLAIV REGION, Ukraine – A global revolution in warfare is dramatically tipping the balance of the Ukraine-Russia conflict, putting the kind of lethality in the hands of frontline troops that until recently required aircraft , ships or tracked vehicles. He also has the ability to switch battlefields away from Eastern Europe.

The centerpiece of the new order of battle is the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System, or Himars. Supplied by the United States and operated by Ukrainian soldiers since June, they bolster light and precise weaponry that includes drones, Javelin anti-tank rockets and Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, enabled by GPS guidance and advanced microelectronics.
