The Trump administration deployed at least 200 federal members of the California National Guard in Oregon during the night on Sunday, officials said, and others are expected after a judge temporarily blocked the administration to deploy custody in Portland.
The California Attorney General Rob Bonta, and Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield said on Sunday that they had jointly asked the American district court that the Oregon district blocks the deployment of 300 federal troops of the California National Guard in Portland, Oregon.
“The Trump administration said that California national guard troops were urgent to maintain peace in Los Angeles – but it sends all of the remaining troops in Oregon without hesitation,” Bonta said in a statement.
On Sunday, during a virtual press conference, Rayfield said that the two states were working together to deposit a second temporary ban order. They argued that the two states “would suffer irreparable damage” because the deployment of troops “violates the sovereignty of the state and the powers of the police reserved for the states under the tenth amendment of the American Constitution”.
“What was illegal yesterday is illegal today … The judge’s order was not a minor procedural point for the president,” said Rayfield.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek said that she knew that 101 Federal Guard of the California National Guard arrived at the Withycombe camp in Oregon on Saturday evening and that it is his understanding that 99 others are on the way.
During the same press conference as Rayfield, the Democratic Governor said that troops should be sent home immediately, stressing that there is no insurrection in Portland and that people have the right to exercise freedom of expression.
“We have not received any official notification or correspondence from the federal government concerning this action by the president,” she said. “This action seems (being) intentional to bypass yesterday’s decision by a federal judge.”
California governor Gavin Newsom confirmed that the 300 troops of the State National Guard sent to Oregon had already been federalized in response to troubles in Los Angeles. He said in a statement that Californian staff were on Sunday and described the deployment of “breathtaking law and power”.
“The commander -in -chief uses the American army as a political weapon against American citizens,” Newsom said in the statement. “We are going to take this fight in court, but the public cannot remain silent in the face of such reckless and authoritarian conduct by the President of the United States.”
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell told CBS News in a statement which, in the direction of the president, around 200 federal members of the California National Guard had been federalized and reassigned to Portland to support ice and other members of federal staff.
The White House spokesman Abigail Jackson confirmed the deployment, saying: “President Trump exercised his legitimate power to protect federal assets and staff in Portland after violent riots and attacks against the police.”
On Saturday evening, the American district judge Karin Immergut, who was appointed by President Trump during his first mandate, made a temporary ban prescription preventing the Trump administration from sending the National Guard. The move came after Trump said he would send troops to the city to manage “domestic terrorists.“”
IMMERGUT said that the relatively low demonstrations that the city has seen did not justify the use of federalized forces and that deployment could harm the sovereignty of the state of Oregon. The prohibition order should expire on October 18, according to the judicial archives.
The American immigration building and customs application in Portland has recently been the site of night demonstrations.
“The facts have not changed. There is no need for military intervention in Oregon,” said Kotek. “There is no insurgency in Portland. No threat to national security. Oregon is our house, not a military target.”
Following the decision, the spokesman for the White House, Abigail Jackson, said that an appeal was likely, saying in a statement that “President Trump exercised his legitimate power to protect federal assets and staff in Portland following violent riots and attacks against the police – we expect to be justified by a higher court”.
