the candidacy of Virginie Calmels reinstated, five contenders for the presidency

The High Authority of Republicans (LR) acted this Friday the “reintegration” of Virginie Calmels in the race for the presidency of the right-wing party, after a court decision in her favor.

The High Authority of LR indicates in a press release to take “act of the decision of the judge in chambers of the Paris judicial court of September 20, 2022. It acts on the reinstatement of Mrs. Virginie Calmels in the electoral process”.

“Consequently, for the sake of equality between declared candidates, the High Authority is postponing the date for filing official applications, accompanied by the required sponsorships, from October 3 to November 3 at 6 p.m. at the latest”, announces she. “The dates of the ballot are maintained: December 3 and 4 for the first round, December 10 and 11 for the second round,” the statement concluded.

A “last minute DIY”

Virginie Calmels, former N.2 of LR, nevertheless believes in Le Figaro that “this election turns into a farce” with a “last minute DIY”. In his eyes, the new electoral calendar constitutes a “violation of the founding texts” of the party.

She points out that the deadlines of November 3 and December 3 no longer respect article 25 of LR’s internal regulations stipulating that it takes “forty-five days at least” between the official validation of applications and the first round of the ballot.

In addition to Virginie Calmels, the declared candidates are the deputy of the Alpes-Maritimes Éric Ciotti, the boss of the senators LR Bruno Retailleau, the secretary general of LR Aurélien Pradié and the mayor of Orléans Serge Grouard. Ciotti and Retailleau are favorites.

Imbroglio on his contribution

On August 29, the High Authority of LR had rejected the candidacy of Virginie Calmels, arguing that she was not up to date with her contribution on July 22, 2022. Virginie Calmels, who renewed her contribution on July 26, had denounced a “maneuver” and challenged this decision in court.

In its judgment of September 20, the Paris court had suspended “the effects attached to the decision of inadmissibility” of his candidacy and ordered Les Républicains to pay him “the sum of 5,000 euros”.

The condition for applying “having only been published and communicated to members on July 25, 2022, necessarily deprived Ms. Calmels of the possibility of regularizing her contribution” in time, the court had estimated. Ms. Calmels tells Le Figaro that she still intends to appeal to the court on the merits, when it has only ruled on questions of form so far.
