The armed suspect, for whom an alert had been issued throughout the province, was finally located and arrested last night around 9:30 p.m., in the Saint-Elzéar-de-Bonaventure sector, in Gaspésie. The tracking of the individual as well as his arrest caused no injuries.
“The sector is no longer cordoned off and people can go about their business since last night, without any problem”, explains Nicolas Scholtus, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).
An investigation is underway and the suspect will soon be met by investigators.
Yesterday, around 4:30 p.m., all Quebecers equipped with a cell phone had received an alert concerning an armed and dangerous suspect wanted in Gaspésie, in the Saint-Elzéar-de-Bonaventure sector. The severity of the danger was then assessed as “extreme” and “imminent”.
“Avoid the area. In the targeted area: take shelter indoors, lock doors, stay away from windows, follow the directives of local authorities,” the alert message read.
On social networks, some Internet users wondered about the relevance of having received the alert, when they were far from the danger zone.
The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) had admitted that “the alert was triggered on a larger scale than what was initially requested”.
At the time of this writing, the identity of the suspect has not been revealed, but the individual is known to the police, according to Sûreté du Québec (SQ) spokesman Nicolas Scholtus.
