Texas dog owner arrested after killing 71-year-old man

Texas authorities have identified and arrested the owner of seven dogs who allegedly mauled a 71-year-old man to death as he walked to his neighborhood store earlier this month.

The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office on Friday arrested and charged Samuel Cartwright, 47, in connection with the death of Freddy Garcia, 71.

Garcia was fatally attacked by seven dogs — all determined to be pit bull mixes — on July 18 as he walked to his neighborhood store in Fresno, Texas.

Authorities responded to the scene and Garcia was airlifted to a Houston-area hospital, where he died of injuries sustained in the attack.

The sheriff’s office, along with Fort Bend Animal Control and the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office, conducted an investigation which determined that Cartwright was the owner of the dogs involved in the attack. All seven dogs have since been captured by the sheriff’s office and animal control.

Cartwright is still being held in Fort Bend County Jail and has been charged with dog attack resulting in death, which is a second degree felony. His bail is set at $100,000.
