Teenage driver faces hit-and-run and other charges after hitting highway worker

MRC des Collines-de-l’Outaouais police arrested a 19-year-old Gatineau resident for hit and run and other misdemeanors after a worker was hit on Highway 309 near Ange-Gardien on Tuesday.

Police say the incident happened around 11:35 a.m. when a car disregarded a highway worker’s instructions to pull over on Highway 309.

The worker was taken to hospital. His injuries were not considered life threatening.

The suspect reportedly drove to the Highway 5 on-ramp where the vehicle was abandoned and the suspect fled along the highway on foot.

When police arrived, the suspect was reportedly “in the middle of the westbound lane trying to stop traffic,” police said in a statement.

Police said the officer used pepper spray in an attempt to subdue the individual, but he still attempted to flee into the woods, where he was quickly captured.

Police thanked a Good Samaritan who stopped to help.

The suspect was arrested for hit-and-run causing bodily harm and drug-impaired driving.

He was taken to hospital for a blood test.

The suspect is believed to have been driving with a suspended license and police say he faces additional criminal charges as well as multiple traffic tickets.
