Teen suspect arrested in brutal NYPD cop robbery

A teenager was arrested Friday in connection with the brutal assault of an off-duty NYPD cop in the Bronx earlier in the week, law enforcement sources said.

Charges were pending against the 18-year-old suspect, sources said. He was arrested in connection with Tuesday’s violent robbery of officer Muhammed Chowdhury, who was jumped by three men while jogging near his Castle Hill home, police and sources said.

Police were still looking for two other suspects in the attack, which is part of a citywide robbery pattern in the Bronx and Queens dating back to August 1.

Chowdhury, 48, suffered a fractured skull and bleeding brains in the assault in which suspects fled with his mobile phone, keys and wallet, according to family members and police .

Chowdhury was found lying on the sidewalk bleeding from his left ear after being punched in the head while jogging from his Bronx home late Monday morning.
The police are investigating the assault on Officer Chowdhury.
Two of his attackers are still at large, police said.

The 18-year-old department veteran, who is assigned to the Central Park precinct, emerged from a coma on Wednesday but remained in critical condition at Jacobi Medical Center, officials said.

Chowdhury is married with three children. His wife Nadira Sherin had pleaded with police chiefs and city leaders to « take this [case] seriously” by arresting the suspects and not letting them out on bail.

« You can’t let these men out the same day they were arrested, » Sherin told the Post on Wednesday, referring to New York’s lenient bail reform law.

« Punish them, » she added. « If they release them the same day, it’s not justice for my husband. »
