The Toronto Blue Jays seemingly borrowed a page from the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night, as they celebrated their triumph over the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series. In the Yankee Stadium clubhouse, the Blue Jays chose an appropriate soundtrack: Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York.”
And manager John Schneider, in launching the postgame celebration, borrowed a famous lyric from the song.
“Start spreading the news!” » » he said in front of the television cameras, before punctuating it with a cheerful curse. “We’re going!”

The Blue Jays will compete in the AL Championship Series for the first time since 2016.
For years, Sinatra’s iconic song was the Yankees’ victory anthem. In 2018, after eliminating the Yankees in the ALDS, the Red Sox set the tone. And on Wednesday, it was used as part of a final stab for the Blue Jays, whose 5-2 victory in Game 4 ended New York’s season. The two clubs had battled for much of the season for the AL East crown, with the Jays winning via tiebreaker.
The Jays beat the Yankees again, thanks in large part to Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who only burnished his reputation as a Yankees killer over the course of the series. Throughout the series, the Blue Jays superstar evaded questions about his past comments about the Yankees, which included a statement that he would never play for the franchise. “Not even dead,” he once said.
“My emotions are neutral right now,” Guerrero said this week through interpreter Hector Lebron.
But during the clubhouse celebration, that hesitation seemed to dissipate. Guerrero conducted an interview with Fox Sports studio analyst and former Red Sox slugger David Ortiz. During the segment, Guerrero did his own version of “Yankees win!” ” call made famous by the team’s former longtime radio voice, John Sterling. Of course, Guerrero punctuated it with his own twist.
