St. Louis toddler dies after shooting himself in the head

ST. LOUIS — A 2-year-old St. Louis boy died after shooting himself in the head, police said Wednesday.

Acting Police Chief Michael Sack said officers responded to a gunshot around 1 p.m. and found the seriously injured boy, who was rushed to hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Police have not released the boy’s name or how he got his hands on the handgun, but Sack called it a « terrible tragedy that should never have happened. »

« Guns are inherently dangerous, » Sack told reporters outside the family home. “There are several in our town. All of us who own firearms or have firearms should be responsible for their care and use.

Sack said at least one family member was home at the time of the shooting and the investigation is ongoing.
