Slovenia heads to second round of presidential election – POLITICO
Conservative candidate Anže Logar looked set to win the most votes in Slovenia’s presidential election on Sunday, but will face his centre-left rival in a runoff, according to partial results.
Logar, the former Slovenian foreign minister, won around 34% of the vote in the first round, with around 80% of ballots counted, Reuters reported, citing preliminary results from the State Election Commission. His main opponent, lawyer Natasa Pirc Musar, won 27% of the vote.
It was widely expected that no candidate would land the 50% level needed for outright victory for the mostly ceremonial position. The Conservatives saw the vote as a chance to regain some support after their defeat in the April parliamentary elections.
« The results confirmed that our slogan – ‘we work together for the future’ – was well received by citizens, » Logar said in his first reaction to the partial results, according to media reports.
The second round of voting is scheduled for November 13.
