The US Senate voted Tuesday, by 51 votes to 47, to confirm more than a hundred of the nominees proposed by President Donald Trump, on the seventh day of government shutdown.
Among Trump’s group of 107 nominees were “more than two dozen ambassadorial nominees,” as well as more than a dozen U.S. attorneys, according to the Hill.
Sergio Gor – whom Trump nominated to serve as US ambassador to India and special envoy for South and Central Asian affairs – and former Georgia US Senate candidate Herschel Walker – whom Trump nominated to serve as US ambassador to the Bahamas – were among the confirmed nominees.
The confirmation of hundreds of the president’s nominees comes after the U.S. Senate confirmed 48 of Trump’s nominees in September.
In a statement, Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-WY) said that before the government shutdown, Senate Democrats “shut down the Senate floor,” which froze “the confirmation process.”
Barrasso highlighted how Senate Republicans confirmed 107 of Trump’s nominees, ending the “Democrat confirmation blockade.”
According to the HillSenate Republicans made a “rules change,” under which the “majority party” is allowed to “adopt nominees en bloc,” rather than on an individual basis.
“CONFIRMED: 107 Trump candidates en bloc, that is, in a single vote,” Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) wrote in an article on X. “Senate business continues, even on the seventh day of Schumer’s shutdown. »
