OPP officers responding to the call around 8:30 a.m. found a trio matching the description of the bystander, but found the weapon to be an airsoft gun that posed no threat to the public security.

Airsoft guns are designed to fire pellets, which are usually plastic but can look like a real firearm. Police seized the weapon and say the investigation is continuing.

“Neighboring schools entered into a confinement and security condition which was lifted shortly after the investigation determined the nature of the complaint,” the Lanark County Ontario Provincial Police said.

“While there is no danger associated with this incident, the public is still encouraged to exercise due diligence regarding their safety and that of those around them.”
