School officials remove elementary school student from Lauderdale County campus after knife and BB gun found

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — An Underwood Elementary School student was kicked off campus Wednesday after school officials say the child brought a BB gun and a knife.

School Principal Brad Chaney and Lauderdale County Schools Superintendent Jerry Hill released a statement regarding the incident and the student’s expulsion on social media.

The release said administrators at Underwood Elementary School were notified that a student had brought a BB gun and a knife onto campus.

In the statement, they say immediate and appropriate measures were taken to ensure the safety of students and staff, including the removal of the student and his items.

An investigation was launched and they said it was determined the items were not brought to the school as a threat.

“There is no indication of harmful intent,” school officials added.

“On October 8, 2025, administrators at Underwood Elementary School were notified that a student had brought a BB gun and a knife onto campus. Immediate and appropriate measures were taken to ensure the safety of all students and staff, including the removal of the student and items in question.
After a thorough investigation, it was determined that the item was not brought to the school as a threat, and that no threats, verbal or written, were made at any time. There was no indication of harmful intent.
The safety and security of our campuses remains a top priority for the Board of Education and all school staff. We are committed to maintaining a safe learning environment for every student.
We commend the Underwood Elementary School administration for their quick and diligent response to this situation. »
