School bus delays expected for Hamilton-Wentworth students this fall

Hamilton-Wentworth Student Transportation Services (HWSTS) expects an industry-wide driver shortage this fall.

In a news release Friday, HWSTS said delays won’t be as severe as in previous years, but students should prepare for delays as new drivers become accustomed to their routes.

HWSTS said the region is currently short 25 drivers, not including replacement drivers. The press release says the number is “subject to change” during the season.

HWSTS covers both public and Catholic school boards, has nearly 500 routes countywide, and delivers nearly 30,000 students to school.

The press release says school bus driver shortages are nothing new and HWSTS has been grappling with “large-scale recruitment and retention challenges for years.”

HWSTS said, “Every delay matters to a student trying to get to school on time.”
