A former actor from the CW series « Riverdale » has been sentenced to life in prison after admitting to killing his mother and planning to assassinate Canadian Prime Minister Judge Trudeau.

Ryan Grantham, 24, was sentenced Tuesday by the Supreme Court of British Columbia in Vancouver. The actor is also ineligible for parole for the next 14 years.

Grantham had previously pleaded guilty to the second degree murder of his 64-year-old mother, Barbara Waite.

Waite was allegedly playing the piano at the family home in Squamish, British Columbia, on March 31, 2020, when his son shot him in the back of the neck.

At a hearing in June, prosecutors said the young actor recorded GoPro video following the murder and recorded his mother’s body.

« I shot him in the back of the neck, » Grantham allegedly admitted on video. « In the moments that followed, she would have known it was me. »

Grantham reportedly wanted to prevent his mother from witnessing the acts of violence he planned to commit afterwards, prosecutors say. His body was quickly found by Grantham’s sister, Lisa.

The day after the murder, the actor allegedly loaded his truck with Molotov cocktails, guns and ammunition and drove east intending to kill Trudeau in Ottawa.

Grantham then turned back after thinking of carrying out a mass shooting at Simon Fraser University, where he was enrolled. He eventually surrendered to the Vancouver Police Department that night.

The young actor reportedly experienced feelings of depression and self-hatred, which prosecutors say were exacerbated by isolation, smoking excessive amounts of cannabis and watching gory videos on the internet.

In a diary entry written on the day of the murder, Grantham reportedly apologized to his family and said « nobody » would understand him.

« I’m so sorry Mom, I’m so sorry Lisa…I hate myself, » he wrote, according to prosecutors. « There’s a lot of media about me out there…film and TV…hundreds of hours of me that can be viewed and dissected…No one will understand. »

Judge Kathleen Ker noted that Grantham was receiving counseling in prison and appeared to be improving, according to the CBC.
