“Risk of frostbite”: the wind chill approaches minus 30 in Oakville and Burlington as well as in Milton and Halton Hills, triggering the cold warning

A cold warning was issued by Halton Region Public Health starting Friday, January 14, with the wind chill expected to drop to near minus 30.

The cold warning is in effect until temperatures exceed -15 degrees Celsius (no wind chill) or weather conditions improve and the risks of prolonged exposure are reduced.

Environment Canada predicts a wind chill of minus 19 Friday afternoon which will drop to minus 29 overnight and Saturday with a “risk of frostbite”.

Exposure to cold can increase the risk of cold-related injuries, including frostbite and hypothermia. These injuries can have serious health consequences, said Halton Region.

Anyone can be affected by extreme cold weather conditions, depending on the length of time you are exposed to the cold and levels of exertion. However, higher risk groups include the elderly (over 65), infants and young children, outdoor workers, sports enthusiasts (hikers, skiers), the homeless and / or those who lack shelter, appropriate clothing or food, the Region added. .

Here are some cold and winter weather safety tips from Halton health officials:

• Cover exposed skin using several layers of loose clothing with a windproof outer layer, hat, mittens and scarf.

• Always watch for signs of frostbite and hypothermia.

• Check in regularly, by phone or video, with family, friends and vulnerable neighbors, especially elderly people who live alone. If phone or video is not possible, when recording with vulnerable people, remember to practice physical distancing and wash your hands frequently. If physical distancing is difficult to maintain, wear a non-medical mask.

• Prepare for winter driving conditions by keeping an automotive survival kit in your car at all times.

• When pipes are near exterior walls, basements or crawl spaces, ensure good air circulation and adequate heat.

• Make sure the temperature in your home is not set too low when your home is vacant.
