Resignations of referees: matches canceled in the Laurentides-Lanaudière region

A wave of resignations among Hockey Laurentides-Lanaudière (HLL) referees, motivated by a conflict with the Region, led to the postponement of several hockey games at all levels.

At the beginning of the evening on Friday, the association indicated in a press release that it had accepted the resignation of regional referee-in-chief Martin Sigouin and those responsible for the territories.

“We hereby inform you that all games in the Laurentides-Lanaudière M11 to Junior region are suspended from midnight tonight until midnight Thursday, November 17, 2022, with the exception of tournaments”, reacted HLL, saying look at his options to resolve the situation quickly.

On Facebook, Minor Hockey Berthierville explained to its members that it had revised the schedule for the next few days and converted the canceled games into intra-team games or training.

“Since there will be no referee, we ask that the activities remain under the full supervision of the coaches,” it was specified.

The newspaper “Le Nord” reported on Friday the departures of the assignor and chief referee for the North zone, Gabrielle Cyr, and of her counterpart in Lanaudière, Miguel Fréchette. Leaders of the Regional Officials Development Program (PDO) have also reportedly abandoned ship.

Uncontrolled money leaks and fees paid by referees for their annual accreditation are said to be at the root of the conflict.
