Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper will undergo surgery for his broken left thumb and is targeting a mid-August return to roster Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Investigator reports.
The reigning National League MVP broke his thumb after being hit by a 97 mph pitch by Padres left-hander Blake Snell on Saturday. Harper fell to the ground and was treated by a trainer as he was clearly in pain for several minutes.
He was finally able to stand and shouted angrily at Snell as he walked off the pitch. The Phillies announced his thumb was broken after the game, but further testing was needed to determine if he needed surgery. Now we know he will.
“He’s a guy who’s really not replaceable on an individual basis, but we’re going to have to be in a position where other people are going to have to step in,” Phillies general manager Dave Dombrowski said.
Harper was already playing with a torn elbow that left him only capable of DH this season. Despite that, he’s hitting .318/.385/.599 with 15 home runs and 48 RBIs.
The Phillies come into play Tuesday with a 39-35 record, which puts them third in Newfoundland East and two games shy of the last wild card.
