Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold was nothing short of optimistic about his chances of playing through a sudden oblique injury in their playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday night.
But on Saturday morning, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter released a report with some concerning new information.
Seahawks coach ‘really optimistic’ QB Sam Darnold will play against 49ers
“Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold hasn’t thrown a football since injuring his oblique on Thursday,” Schefter wrote on social media. “The Seahawks believe, but do not know, that he will be ready to start tonight’s game against the 49ers. Backup quarterback Drew Lock has taken reps the past two days and is ready if needed.”
NFL Network’s Steve Wyche shared his own report from Seattle’s Lumen Field on Saturday morning, and while he had similar information relayed to him by a Seahawks official, Wyche’s report seemed more encouraging overall on Darnold’s status.
Can the Seahawks beat the 49ers if Drew Lock is QB instead of Sam Darnold?
“(The Seahawks official) said first of all when Darnold had that injury, he said it was something he had never felt before, so they were very careful. They basically shut him down,” Wyche said. “But they said that not only were they optimistic, but Darnold himself felt very confident in his ability to go out and play. Now they’re going to work him out before kickoff, but again, all signs point to Sam Darnold being ready to play for the Seahawks.”
Darnold, who is a Pro Bowler for the second straight season, started all 17 games for the Seahawks as they finished 14-3 to win the NFC West and take the NFC’s top seed for the playoffs.
