Dale McEwen told AGLC he was on a family ski trip from Saskatchewan to Alberta on April 1 when he stopped at a gas station in Dunmore, a hamlet near Medicine Hat, and bought a Lotto Max ticket.

The next day, he discovered that his ticket matched all seven winning numbers, a feat which the AGLC says comes with odds of around one in 33 million.

“I can’t even describe it,” McEwen told AGLC. “Dreaming of winning and actually winning are two very different feelings. You think you know what it would feel like, but when it’s in your hands, your mind won’t stop: and you can’t even sleep.

McEwen says he and his family have planned what to do with the windfall, including traveling and helping family and friends.

“It’s stressful – but not bad stress,” he said.

McEwen came forward after the ticket went unclaimed for weeks.

The AGLC says the $70 million prize broke the previous record of $65 million awarded to a Calgary resident in October 2019.

The draw also included 40 Maxmillions of $1 million each, and 12 of those were claimed, with that cash prize being shared among 18 winning ticket holders across the country.
