Red Sox add Vazquez and Arauz to COVID injury list

BOSTON — Red Sox wide receiver Christian Vázquez and infielder Jonathan Araúz have been added to the COVID-19 injury list.

The team announced its additions on Tuesday, a day after wide receiver Kevin Plawecki and two staff members tested positive for the virus.

Right-handed pitcher Tyler Danish was recalled from Worcester and Boston selected contract outfielder Rob Refsnyder from the Triple-A farm team to take his place on the roster.

Boston opened a three-game series against Toronto on Tuesday night.

After Sunday’s 8-1 win over the Twins, Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Boston expects to be without several unvaccinated players for an upcoming series in Toronto.

Starting pitcher Tanner Houck told the Boston Globe on Sunday that he was not vaccinated for COVID-19 and would not pitch during the four-game series beginning April 25. He would have been in line to start Game 2.

To enter Canada, the Canadian government requires a person to have received a second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine – or a dose from Johnson & Johnson – at least 14 days prior to entry.

Players sidelined by COVID-19 vaccine issues don’t get paid and don’t accrue major league service time while on the shortlist.
