FRANKFURT – Germany triggered the “alarm phase” of its emergency gas plan on Thursday following a drop in Russian supplies, but will not allow utilities to pass on the surge for now. costs on consumers.

Here are the comments from government, business and industry groups:

ROBERT HABECK, GERMAN ECONOMY MINISTER:

“Even if volumes of gas can still be purchased on the market and are still stored: the situation is serious and winter will come. We should make no mistake: the gas cut is an economic attack on us by (Russian President Vladimir) Putin. This is obviously Putin’s strategy to create insecurity, drive up prices and divide us as a society. This is what we are fighting against… Gas is now a rare commodity. Prices are already high and we must be prepared for further increases. It will affect industrial production and become a heavy burden for many consumers. It is an external shock.

KLAUS-DIETER MAUBACH, CEO of UNIPER

“It is not a solution for this winter if the supply situation remains as it is or continues to deteriorate over the next few weeks.

“Gas storage levels are a ‘thermometer’ for Germany’s security of supply. If this shows that it is not possible to replenish gas storage facilities by October as required by law, further action will be needed immediately and urgently.

E.ON, GERMANY’S LARGEST ENERGY COMPANY:

“The declaration of the alarm phase does not change the fundamental status quo at the moment. What is decisive is that the Federal Government now creates the framework conditions necessary for the scenario of a significant reduction in the volumes of import of gas in order to ensure the capacity for action of the actors concerned and to stabilize the markets and the supply of gas.

KERSTIN ANDREAE, MANAGING DIRECTOR OF THE GERMAN ASSOCIATION OF ENERGY AND WATER INDUSTRIES (BDEW)

“It was right to declare the alert level. Currently, the supply is guaranteed, but we must turn our attention to the coming winter… The German government has called on citizens and industry to save energy as much as possible today. The more gas we save today, the more we can use to fill storage facilities.

WOLFGANG GROSSE ENTRUP, HEAD OF THE VCI CHEMICAL INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION:

“It is a logical step to react to the increasingly serious supply situation and to stabilize the markets. This also applies to natural gas volumes and price spikes. The federal government is acting responsibly and moving forward step by step. The political reduction of Russian gas supplies poses increasingly daunting challenges to society and industry. The associated charges must be equitably distributed.
