Quebec did not listen to its experts on the rapid administration of a 3rd dose to the infected

Quebec’s decision to allow people infected with COVID-19 to receive a 3e dose at the end of their symptoms is “operational” needs and not in the opinion of its public health experts.

The Ministry of Health, however, said Wednesday that it had been taken “following a recommendation from public health”, yet two members of the Quebec Immunization Committee (CIQ) reply that it is rather government decision.

Asked what scientific arguments it was based on, the MSSS had not yet responded late Wednesday afternoon.

The QMI Agency, however, obtained the recommendation of the former National Director of Public Health, Dr.r Horacio Arruda, on this subject, a document he signed on the very day of his resignation.

One final recommendation from Arruda

In favor of allowing the infected to quickly obtain a 3e dose, the latter considers the positions of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI).

He also cites the “non-availability of PCR tests” and “the limited capacity of the laboratories” where the tests are analyzed.

The position of the Quebec Immunization Committee (CIQ) is also mentioned there, but to say that it “does not eliminate” the option.

However, this is not quite the opinion of the group of experts normally consulted by the government, believe the Dr Gaston De Serres and the DD Maryse Guay, also a professor at the University of Sherbrooke.

“We discussed it with them and we said: no, we are not going there” indicated in an interview, Gaston De Serres, specifying that this is one of the first times that the government has not followed. not the CIQ’s position.

Operational and administrative imperatives

“The CIQ did not say: you can do it before, no, no no. There is a decision at the government level to say “we want to do it sooner”, but this is not the opinion of the CIQ “, specified the doctor-epidemiologist.

According to the exact position of the CIQ, a person infected with COVID should rather “ideally” wait three months before having his 3e vaccine dose and “minimally” eight weeks.

“It has not changed on the side of scientific data, the disease offers excellent protection, but currently, operational or administrative imperatives have taken over,” said DD Maryse Guay.

In the context where the PCR tests analyzed in laboratories are now reserved for certain categories of essential workers and where there is a lack of rapid tests, Gaston De Serres says he understands the usefulness of such a decision, in particular for the management of the vaccine passport. Many symptomatic Quebecers do not know if they have contracted COVID-19 or another virus and therefore do not know if they should wait before having their 3e dose.

For the vaccination passport?

Last Thursday, the Minister of Health, Christian Dubé, announced his intention to expand the vaccine passport to three doses once the entire population has had the opportunity to receive it, which could take several months if people infected. must wait for the deadline recommended by the CIQ.

“To say that we are going to act as if the infection did not exist and that it takes three doses for everyone for the passport [vaccinal], yes, that makes the passport easy to manage, but is there a medical reason that justifies it? No, ”said Gaston De Serres.
