Putin plans to take on Batman — RT Games & Culture

Russia should do more to promote its own fictional characters, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said. Putin made the statement during a meeting with Russian historians on Friday, as the country celebrated Unity Day.
The president was responding to a remark by one of the attendees, who said that Western superheroes like Batman and Spiderman are better known to Russian children than any of the country’s heroes.
« Batman is known, but some of our bogatyrs aren’t. It should be in cartoons, movies, children’s literature. It needs to be multiplied, it needs to be repeated…build on it, » says Putin. A « bogatyr » is a traditional character of Russian and, generally, East Slavic legends, resembling a Western European knight.
However, simply introducing these characters to media and culture is not enough, Putin warned, adding that the work on this project must be far-reaching. “Among other things, we have gathered here today to start this process,” he said.
« It won’t work if it doesn’t fall on the whole education system, starting with kindergarten », says Putin.
The animated film series « The Three Bogatyrs » was a box office success in Russia. Popular films include modernized versions of Russian folk tales about warrior heroes like Ilya Muromets, Alyosha Popovich, and Dobrynya Nikitich.
