Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Bihar’s Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana on Friday (September 26), transferring ₹10,000 each to the bank accounts of 75 lakh women across the state – a total disbursement of ₹7,500 crore.

Designed to promote women’s empowerment and self-reliance (Aatmanirbharta), the program aims to create independent work and livelihood opportunities. It is universal in scope, providing financial assistance to one woman from every family in Bihar to help them start or expand income-generating activities.

The Prime Minister launched the program virtually from Delhi, with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and other ministers scheduled to join him via video conferences from Patna.

An initial grant of ₹10,000 will be given, with the possibility of up to ₹2 lakh additional support in later phases, officials said. The initiative will be community-based, with training provided by resource persons affiliated with self-help groups. To facilitate the sale of goods and services, rural markets (gramin haats) will be developed.

The launch comes amid a flurry of developments and welfare announcements from the NDA governments at the Center and in Bihar, ahead of the upcoming state elections, as the ruling alliance seeks to retain power.

RJD MP Sanjay Yadav took a dig at the NDA government, saying, “This is a copycat government. What have they done for the past twenty years? Their eyes opened only after Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav announced the Mai Bahin Maan Yojana, which gives ₹2,500 per month. They are scared, hopeless and hopeless.”
