Pentagon unveils new shipment of Ukrainian weapons — RT World News

The Pentagon will send four more rocket artillery systems to Ukraine under the latest $450 million military aid package, the US government announced Thursday. This would bring the total number of HIMARS launchers sent to kyiv to eight, the first of which would have already reached Ukrainian troops.

The latest tranche of military aid to Kyiv includes four more M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launchers, Pentagon acting press secretary Todd Breasseale confirmed Thursday. Last week, Politico was the first to report that Washington was considering sending more systems to the Ukrainians, “based on the immediate needs of Ukraine.”

“The United States has now committed approximately $6.8 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since the start of the Biden administration,” Breasseale added.

kyiv, however, requested a much larger amount of weapons – “ten times more” HIMARS, Ukrainian MP Alexandra Ustinova had told Politico, describing the four on the way as “nothing.”

The first batch of four launchers has already arrived, said Ukrainian Defense Minister Alexey Reznikov announcement on Twitter, thanking his “colleague and friend” Lloyd Austin for the “powerful tools” and wishing death on the Russian troops.

On Wednesday, his ministry celebrated mounting a rocket launcher, allegedly from a downed Russian helicopter, to a Mitsubishi pick-up truck as a band-aid – known as the “technical” – until the arrival of the HIMARS.

In addition to the US wheeled launchers, the UK is sending three of the tracked M270 MLRS to Ukraine, which use the same ammunition. Three more units are supposed to come from Germany, which has already sent PHz2000 self-propelled guns to kyiv as well. Although the United States initially claimed that the launchers would be equipped with “battlefield ammunition”, Pentagon policy chief Colin Kahl revealed earlier this month that the United States was supplying Ukraine with heavy guided missiles, with a range of 70 kilometers.

Last week, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said kyiv needed 300 MLRS launchers, 500 tanks and 1,000 howitzers to achieve heavy weapons parity with Russia, before being reprimanded by a defense official .

According to the Russian Defense Ministry on Thursday, Ukrainian forces had lost a total of 647 MLRS launchers, including several foreign-made ones that were hit in warehouses in Nikolaev overnight.

Meanwhile, there were unconfirmed reports that two of the French-made 155mm CAESAR howitzers supplied to kyiv were captured by Russian or allied troops and sent to Russia for study. In a Telegram post on Thursday, Russian arms maker Uralvagonzavod jokingly thanked President Emmanuel Macron for the “present” and asked him to “send more” to disassemble. However, there was no official confirmation of the capture of the howitzers.
