Penny Mordaunt launches UK leadership bid – POLITICO
Penny Mordaunt, Britain’s Minister for International Trade, has joined an increasingly crowded race to succeed British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
His announcement on Twitter Sunday morning followed a slew of entries over the weekend. Jeremy Hunt and Sajid Javid, both former health secretaries, confirmed their plans on Saturday night in interviews with The Telegraph. Two incumbent ministers have also announced they will be vying for the top spot: Transport Secretary Grant Shapps and Nadhim Zahawi, the former education secretary who was recently appointed chancellor.
They join Attorney General Suella Braverman as contenders in the current government.
The latest announcements bring the total list of Tory candidates to nine, following the collapse in support that forced Johnson to resign on Thursday. Johnson said he would remain in office until his party chooses a replacement.
Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak, long considered one of Johnson’s main internal rivals, launched his campaign on Friday. Other runners include former equality minister Kemi Badenoch, who stepped in on Saturday, and Tory lawmaker Tom Tugendhat.
